Brushless PM Motors, Advantages/Disadvantages, Examining Selected Precision Application Examples for Sub-Fractional Motors
Brushless PM motors became the 'darling' of the electric motor industry about 20 years ago. It took developments in semiconductors (power devices and microprocessors) to vault this technology into prominent status. In this first of three sessions on electric motors used in precision applications, we will examine the reasons why sub-FHP brushless motors have led to a vast increase in uses. The attendee will have a way to judge when and why brushless is best over competing technologies.

DC (Brush) PM & Piezo Motors, Advantages/Disadvantages, Examining Selected Precision Application Examples for Sub-Fractional Motors
Brush DC PM motor technology continues to be used in a wide variety of applications because it is a simple and inexpensive way to implement a motion system. Despite the pundits who said brushless would replace Brush DC PM technology, wholesale, Brush DC PM motors are very much in demand and the motor technology of choice in many applications. Why pay for performance you don't need? Coreless versions and Piezo motors, an interesting variation on mechanical commutation, will be examined.

PM Stepper Motor Technology, Advantages/Disadvantages, Selected Application Examples Examined
Step motors are an example of a technology that takes on the characteristics of both AC and DC motors. Step motors can operate as synchronous AC motors or take on the characteristics of positioning servos in either case without feedback. We will examine the use of steppers in precision motion applications with a focus on PM and consideration of v/r and hybrid technologies. Real world examples will help us better understand how and why the technology makes sense.
